You are going to love our Artist of the Month: Marco Recuero, a graphic designer and illustrator of northern Spain. His creations are colorful and powerful! We have no doubt, you are going to adopt them for your device(s)!
We asked him a few questions, to discover him and his creative universe…
Marco Recuero in a few words?
I work as a graphic designer and illustrator in Asturias, a region located on the northwest coast of Spain. Asturias is known as “Natural paradise”. I set up the studio in 1999 but I have been working in graphic design since 1992.
How would you summarise your art?
It is a tricky question because I do not consider myself an artist, but simply a graphic designer. In short, all my projects try to convey who I am: my tastes, my lifestyle and my experiences.
How do you choose the subject of your designs?
Most of my projects are commisssioned by my clients. I am lucky to be specialized in cultural activities. Some of my works involve the design of books and book covers as well as the illustration of children’s books.
Where do you get inspiration from?
Everything that surrounds me can be a source of inspiration. From things that I love – such as science fiction cinema or children’s and young people’s literature, to things that I hate, like the circus.
Which artist or designer do you admire the most? Why?
I admire a large number of designers and artists, so it would be impossible to choose only one person. Some of them are close to me and we are friends. I reckon that these relationships have enriched my work.
Needless to say, I am a big fan of well-known artists. Names such as Jim Flora, Olle Eksell and Miroslav Hasek, and their plainness and expressiveness immediately spring to mind.
I really like the simplicity and elegance of the illustrator Malika Favre. I love the stories of Luke Pearson, who uses incredible colours in his illustrations. Mcbess, Sanna Annukka, Tom Gauld, Malota, Mads Berg, Paula Bonet … Everyday I discover someone amazing.
What is your favorite piece of art (painting? Sculpture? …)
It is, without doubt, “The Garden of Earthly Delights” by Hieronymus Bosch.
What is your creative process like?
As most illustrators I like to keep my tools handy, i.e. a sketchbook full of drawings, a propelling pencil because I do not like sharpening pencils and my Amsterdam markers. When I like a sketch I take a photo to redraw it using Adobe Illustrator.
Among all the designs you created (for the Kase), which one is your favorite ?
My favourite design is Mermaid.
What about your next project(s)?
I am very excited with the possibility of illustrating a children’s book about Sherlock Holmes!
